Here are some of my favorite must-reads this time of year:
The Classics:
The Gift of the Magi-by O' Henry- I love this short story about the deep love of a couple and their desire to give up their most treasured gifts for each other. I am always drawn to this story and is a must read every year.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens- I have to read this story every year. I love the tale and it's message. It has always been a tradition in my family to watch the movie version with George C Scott every year on Christmas Eve.
A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore - A favorite of all. A must read short story before bed on Christmas Eve.
Other great Christmas reads:
Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah - I read this story a couple of years ago for the first time and loved it. A great story for the season with surprising twists and turns.
On Strike for Christmas by Sheila Roberts -Any girls dream...to go on strike at Christmas time. And of course nothing would get done. "The right way," that is. The movie came out last year, and I have yet to see it. Maybe I'll pick it up and watch this season.
What stories are a must-read for you this time of year? What are your favorite Holiday tales?
I've just read Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory, it's now one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read that one. I will have to pick it up this season. Fun!
DeleteInteresting, Rebecca. I don't think I've read a holiday book as "a holiday book." I read a Mary Higgins Clark novel that centered around Christmas, but I don't think I read it during the holiday season. I might have to change that. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, you should! It makes it so much more fun!
DeleteWe read The Night Before Christmas to the kids every year. Love it!
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely a must read!
DeleteI was just talking about Gift of the Magi and Christmas Carol to my creative writing class to help them with their assignment of writing a Christmas themed story.
ReplyDeleteOf course, my current favorite short Christmas story is "Christmas on the Corner," but I'm probably biased.
Oh...I must read and add to my list!
DeleteGreat list! I don't have any specific holiday tales I must read, but I hope to find some new ones with my son.
ReplyDeleteOn Strike For Christmas sounds really good.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about doing a post about holiday books--I'm looking for more. So your post was nice to find! I've just started buying some Christmas picture books (which is new for me). So thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteOh--and my two new favorite Christmas picture books that feel really special are:
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Magic by Lauren Thopmson and Jon Muth, and
A Pussycat's Christmas by Margaret Wise Brown and Anne Mortimer.
