H-Hematoma and Concussions and Characters From YA Books

ematoma and Concussions

Every year teens are admitted to the emergency room for sports and/or recreational-related head injuries and concussions.

It is believed that head injuries can cause major issues later in life, including depression and aggression.

Here are some characters from YA books that deal with concussions and head injuries.

Nick Taglio from Open Ice by Pat Hughes has been skating since he could walk. But playing hockey means you have to take some hits and concussions come with the territory. When he gets another head injury, his doctor, his parents, and his coach tell him he can never play again. Too dangerous, they say. He can’t risk his future. But hockey is his life.

Jenna Fox from The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson has just awoken from a coma, they tell her, and she is still recovering from a terrible accident in which she was involved a year ago. But what happened before that? Jenna doesn't remember her life. Or does she? And are the memories really hers?

The Adoration of Jenna Fox sounds like a great read! I'm adding it to my TBR list.

There's been a lot of research lately about the long-term effects of head injuries. I believe a head injury is what led to Zane's recent seizure activity.

Sometimes those injuries can trigger something else that doctors never caught.

I remember wanting to wrap my kids in bubble wrap when they were little...it is certainly no better now that they are teens!

I've had a concussion before (falling on ice) and, yes, they're nothing to fool with. Any blow to the head should be treated as serious.

Thanks for spotlighting the Pearson book. I hadn't heard of it before. Adding it to my TBR list now. :)
